TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) - There are stunning revelations against the embattled Niagara County SPCA, Friday.
Some of the findings released by Barbara Carr, the Executive Director of the Erie County SPCA, were so disturbing, she paused and wiped away tears, before saying what she discovered.
After completing her investigation about allegations of animal abuse and mismanagement at the Niagara County SPCA, one thing is clear. Carr says there are no standard operating procedures across the board. From the record keeping, to the staff, no one is properly trained.
The most disturbing discovery Carr made involved how the shelter euthanized, or killed animals. While other animals were in the room, the staff injected a sedative into the animal, paralyzing the muscles. Then while the animal was still conscious, it was injected with a liquid that went into the heart, causing excruciating pain.
Carr says the practice ended in November when a new veterinarian technician came in. It's awful but not illegal. And some employees at the shelter said they killed animals that way because it was easier. Carr says it's clear the NCSPCA is dysfunctional in many ways. Still she says people in Niagara County need to help.
Carr said, "The community should support the organization fully and that means with donations by going to them with animals that are homeless and by certainly adopting from them."
"If they don't at this point more animals will definitely suffer," said Carr.
Carr says the claim that 573 healthy animals were killed in a short period of time is not true. She says some of the animals were healthy, but others were not.
In short, Carr says this is a crisis, a serious concern and major changes are needed.
