One specific runner however, was raising money for a permanent memorial to honor Western New York soldiers killed in the wars of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Dan Frontera, a retired Army Sergeant, began "Operation 50 Run" in 2012. "The goal is to erect that memorial in the Buffalo Naval and Services Park, where it belongs. So it can be a place of honor so our families know we haven't forgotten their children. We haven't forgotten their loved ones."
During the run, the retired sergeant carried a 50lb ruck sack bearing the names of all 63 Western New York military members killed since the war in Afghanistan broke out in 2001.
Frontera's goal is to raise $50,000 in donations to pay for a memorial that will go in Buffalo. He currently has raised $7,000 but said he will run every mile until he reaches his goal.
