BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) - Patrick Kaleta served a 10-game suspension for an illegal hit to Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson. His suspension ended and the veteran enforcer was due back in the lineup for Buffalo tonight when they host the Anaheim Ducks. That will not be the case as the team released the veteran forward.
Kaleta was not on the ice for the team's optional morning skate nor at his locker post practice.
Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier issued the following statement.
“This was a move we thought was necessary to help Pat change his game and preserve his career in this league,” Regier said. “We believe in Pat as a person and we hope he will continue his career in our organization and, if the circumstances are right, with the Buffalo Sabres.”
Kaleta's latest suspension was his third in a span of 3-seasons. The latest was received with heavy criticism around the league and apparently with the Sabres.
If Kaleta clears waivers he will be assigned to Rochester. If the Sabres need a roster spot in the future he could rejoin the team.
The Angola, NY native spent his entire NHL career with the Buffalo Sabres, beginning in 2006. He scored 27 goals and amassed over 500 penalty minutes.
Buffalo will host Anaheim tonight at the First Niagara Center at 7pm. Jhonas Enroth is expected to get the start in net. Corey Tropp returns to the lineup after suffering a broken jaw in the preaseason. Mikhail Grigorenko will be a healthy scratch. .
One other note from today's practice, former first round pick Joel Armia returned to the ice for the first time this regular season. He is not be ready to play, but it was a good sign since the winger has missed 14-games with a hand injury.
