AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) - A judge handed down a sentence for a man who stabbed two mall security guards. Twenty-five-year-old Dardrequez Haynes will be spending the next five years in prison for stealing from the Gap store at the Boulevard Mall, and then stabbing two security guards.
Haynes is from Syracuse and according to prosecutors, came to the store with a knife and foil-lined Gap bag, with the intent to shoplift and used the knife when he was confronted. Haynes stabbed one guard in the leg and the other in the neck. Neither were seriously injured.
Haynes argued he did not steal that particular day, that the guards did not identify themselves and that he used the knife for self defense. Haynes has a prior felony for a similar shoplifting charge near Rochester and seven other misdemeanor convictions.
Judge Christopher Burns also said Haynes lied about previous claims to the court.
Burns said, “You've got a problem with the truth all the way around, Mr. Haynes. You're a career thief. You could have killed somebody here and it's pretty clear to me that you would rather steal for a living than work for a living.”
Haynes was then sentenced to five years in prison and will also serve five years post-release supervision.
