BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Two months ago, the State Education Department was praising the progress at Pinnacle Charter School. Now, out of the blue, the state wants to school to close.
The New York State Education Department is recommending that Pinnacle Charter School be shut down. Pinnacle's parents, students, and administrators are against it.
"The state was here in December, and spent two days inspecting and reviewing our school, and then issued a favorable report in February. And now, two months later, they are telling us to empty the school, lock the building, and throw away the key," says School Board Chairwoman Dr. Fenice Boyd.
The school's fate will be decided next Tuesday. That's when the Board of Regents will vote, yes or no, on renewing Pinnacle's certification.
"Today, we want to appeal to all of those who are in control of the pen and paper, whether or not you put a 'yes' or a 'no.' It is our greatest appeal that you would check off, 'yes.'" says Rev. Alan Core.
Pinnacle is in the midst of a turnaround plan, according to its website. Parents and staff say, it's working. But they hope to buy a little more time.
"Never judge us by our past, but look at us as of what we are today," says Core.
"Our test scores are going up, and our children are receiving an excellent education at Pinnacle and we want that to continue," says Boyd.
560 students, from Kindergarten through eighth grade, will be displaced if Pinnacle is shuttered. The school board has hired an attorney, to fight the closure and is also appealing to state and city lawmakers.
