SHELBY, N.Y. (WIVB) - A 24-year-old man was trapped in his car after deputies say he drove over the center line and crashed head-on into an 18-wheeled tanker carrying liquid oxygen.
The Orleans County Sheriff's Office says the accident happened around 5 p.m. on Tuesday on South Gravel Road in the Town of Shelby. According to authorities, Stephen Thomas II of Albion drove over the center line and after being hit by the tanker, his car went off the east side of the road and came to rest in a yard.
Thomas was trapped for 45 minutes while fire crews worked to free him from his vehicle. He was flown to Strong Memorial Hospital by Mercy Flight. His condition is not known.
The driver of the tanker, 32-year-old Shawn Scott of Derby, was uninjured but taken to Medina Memorial Hospital as a precaution.
None of the liquid oxygen spilled in the crash and its tank was not compromised. Scott was hauling for the Linde Group, which has a local terminal in Buffalo.
