BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Thursday morning, Buffalo teachers are refusing to budge on a controversial issue that's holding up millions of dollars for the district.
After a closed door meeting Wednesday night, 150 Buffalo teacher delegates came out with a decision. They're not budging over a new controversial evaluation plan.
"We're not gonna go for it, we're gonna keep the attendance policy as it is," said one teacher who didn't share their name. "We haven't gotten our back pay in seven years, or our steps and it's not our job to wake children up and bring them to school."
The State Education Department is forcing the district to adopt a new teacher evaluation system in order for Buffalo Schools to continue receiving federal funding for its underachieving schools.
Buffalo teachers have written a clause that says the grades of students who are frequently absent shouldn't count against the evaluations.
"We see it as unfair to be judged on the basis of performance of students who are chronically absent from school," said Buffalo School Psychologist Mark Mecca.
The Buffalo School Board urged teachers to drop the clause because Buffalo might not get $9 million in federal funding for underachieving schools.
