BROCTON, N.Y. (WIVB) - The Westfield Academy and Central School Board has decided to cancel the remaining Westfield-Brocton football season following a recommendation by the superintendent.
The board voted Monday night and the measure passed unanimously. Both teams had been informed of the pending motion, and players shared ways to honor their teammate, 16-year-old Damon Janes, throughout the remainder of the year and into the future, allowing them to continue to grieve off the playing field.
Janes died on September 16 after a helmet-to-helmet hit during a game three days earlier. The community gathered to pay tribute to the fallen teenager last week, who was laid to rest Saturday in Westfield.
Section VI has been notified of the district's decision. Both Brocton and Westfield continue to offer counseling services to students and players.
