BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A dramatic scene unfolded overnight as huge flames chased two women out of a burning home in downtown Buffalo. Dealing with an early morning fire was quite enough for residents to deal with, but on top of that, they had to try and save the four dogs that also lived in the east side home.
Residents of the East Eagle Street home woke to find smoke billowing from their dining room. One of the two was awaken by the smoke and was frantic.
Resident Tonya Jackson said, "We were sleeping and I was like heavy asleep and the house was full of smoke and she woke me up and she said ‘I'm telling you the house is on fire' and we tried to put it out with the hose coming from the back room, we tried to put it out we couldn't put it out."
Firefighters were called to the scene around 3 a.m. Thursday. Those that live at the east side home believe a pilot light on a new stove, which was just installed, sparked the fire.
Jackson said, "They lit, the pilot just ignited by itself. It burned everything we have in the dining room."
The occupants say their dogs had minor burn injuries. Firefighters did treat the pups on sight, giving them water from a bottle, one was even placed on a stretcher by one of Buffalo's bravest to be examined. One of the four dogs inside the burning home in still unaccounted for.
The home next door also caught fire and a second alarm was called out.
Buffalo Fire Department Division Chief Don McFeely said, "We found heavy fire conditions on the first floor, all the occupants were out. We went in with an offensive attack, we got three dogs out. The house next door was already involved so we had a couple extra companies called in."
We do know that two of the dogs are being treated at the Green Acres Small Animal Hospital for burns.
