AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) - The University of Buffalo is expanding, and hit a record number of students this year. Just under 30,000 enrolled at the SUNY school.
"I think it's good for certainly the students that are here, but it's good for the region," UB Provost Dr. Charles Zukowski said. "It's very exciting for us because, to me, it indicates that we are perceived to be developing to sort of things students want to pay for."
Of the students enrolled, 17 percent are international students. That equates to around 5,000 students.
Bulbul Agarwal came to UB from India, where she says she read about the university in US News Best College Ranking.
"It has a good reputation in Computer Science, plus the fact that he mentioned, its close proximity to New York and Boston, so we have a good scope," Agarwal said.
At UB, New York State residents pay $8,000 a year for tuition, while international students pay around $20,000 a year. But Agarwal says compared to other universities, it's a good price.
Kaustubh Vartak, who came to UB for their Computer Science program, said, "One of the main reasons was tuition and of course feedback from seniors. Plus I saw what kind of jobs people who graduated from here got, and it was truly impressive."
Provost Zukowski added, "The UB brand and what differentiates us is value and that's why students are coming."
Some students cited UB's proximity to Toronto, NY and Boston. Mangess Kasliker heard about UB through an internet forum out of India called "bits2msphd."
"I wanted a university which gets the basics right first, and UB, I saw they had this distinguished line of professors and alumni and they teach all the basic courses first," Kasliker said.
UB's plans to build a new medical school downtown is also creating a buzz. However, since only U.S. students can enroll in UB's School of Medicine, it doesn't factor into high international enrollment numbers.
