BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A dedicated University at Buffalo student got a big boost for her education.
News 4's Jacquie Walker was on hand at the annual meeting of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Monday night to deliver a $5,000 scholarship to UB Senior Christine Tajhjadi-Lopez.
Christine was selected for the AAUW Jacquie Walker Scholarship from among a pool of local college applicants. She rose to the top based on her strong academic record and her dedication to serving the community. Christine is studying international trade. Her goal is to work as an advocate in the anti-human trafficking movement in our nation's capital.
This is the fifth year the AAUW women has presented a $5,000 scholarship in Jacquie's name as a means of honoring her service to the community. The scholarship money comes from funds raised during the AAUW's annual used book sale. Each year the organization collects more than 100,000 new and used books from area residents, categorizes them, and sells them to raise money for local scholarships and educational programs. Most books are priced at 50 cents and one dollar.
The AAUW Buffalo branch is now accepting donated books for its 2014 book sale. You may drop off donations of books, DVDs, CDs, audio books, puzzles and games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Kensington Bailey neighborhood housing services, 995 Kensington Avenue, Buffalo. The group cannot pickup items and they do not accept textbooks, Reader's Digest condensed books, magazines, videotapes, records, or encyclopedias.
The 2014 book sale is set for May 28 through June 1, 2014. The location is to be announced.
