Town of Tonawanda, N.Y. (WIVB) - The boy made a big impression in his neighborhood.
We just ask, Lord, that you watch over his family and keep your hands on them, so that they know they've got an angel in heaven watching down on them...
One look around the playground at the Sheridan Parkside Community Center Saturday evening could show just about anyone that Imani Gilbert was loved.
Close friends of Gilbert's family identify him as the boy who was struck by a car Thursday evening, while he was riding his bicycle across Delaware Road at Sheridan Drive.
He did not survive.
"It hurts. It hurts. Took a piece of my heart.," said Felicia Viverette, mother of the boy's best friend.
Practically everyone in the Sheridan Parkside neighborhood knows Imani Gilbert, 12.
For the last four years, he and Felicia Viverette's son have been best friends, spending almost every day together.
"He was very impressionable. He was smart. He loved sports; basketball, football. He was a happy kid. (pause) He was a good kid. He didn't deserve to die," added Viverette.
As tears flowed, prayers were recited, candles were lit and hugs were given...
Gilbert's friends, classmates, teammates, their parents and neighbors all shared their memories...
He always had a smile on his face.
"Always." "Very, very respectful." "Manners, always," one person told the mourners.
"Good athlete. Straight-A student," said Gilbert's father.
"Should've seen him on the field the last 30 days in front of our apartment building, playing with his brothers. He was nailing it."
Kids played a little pickup basketball, and football for their friend...
Before Gilbert's father sent balloons skyward, in his son's memory.
Gilbert would have turned 13 on September 3.
