BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Waking up early in the morning can lead to success. There is a Benjamin Franklin saying, "Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise." News 4 asked sleep experts if they thought the saying was true.
Buffalo Niagara Sleep Medicine Nurse Practitioner Michele Levine said, "I do, I do I think getting up early allows one to enjoy the simple pleasures of life."
The morning is a time to de-stress, organize and mentally center yourself for the day ahead.
Levine said, "Which tends to improve your mood, energy, focus."
Levine says thats why some of the most successful people in our world are early risers.
President and First Lady are early risers and so are some historic figures who've positively impacted our area.
The historic Martin Complex was designed by a famous early morning riser, Frank Lloyd Wright apparently got up at 4 in the morning and said he did his best work then.
Maybe it's also because Wright didn't have all of the technological distractions that we have today. Levine says that's the biggest reason why people can't sleep in our area and therefore get up as early.
Levine explained, "People never shut off. Looking at phones, work email at home, they're just not getting enough sleep."
Not getting enough sleep can lead to more traffic accidents, poor focus, and bad moods, but more importantly could impact how successful you are in this lifetime.
You should be getting between six to nine hours of sleep a night. Experts say don't make up for it on the weekends. If you think you have a sleeping problem, first talk to your primary care physician before you to to the sleep center.
