BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Wegmans will cut back on health care benefits for part-time workers because of President Obama's new health care law.
Wegmans has about 5,000 full- and part-time workers in the Buffalo area, but starting in 2015, the supermarket chain will no longer extend health care benefits to employees who work less than 30 hours a week.
Those workers will still be eligible for benefits through the federal government.
Congressman Chris Collins says these are the consequences opponents of the Affordable Care Act warned about.
"This 'Obamacare' is a real problem for the economy, for jobs, for workers, and in fact for America. And Wegmans' decision to make significant changes in the type of coverage they offer and who they offer it to is similar to stories we're getting every day," Collins said.
Wegmans has met with workers to explain the changes. A spokesperson says the company is committed to helping employees get through this process.
Wegmans spokesman Theresa Jackson released a statement that said, "Even though the new health care law is requiring some changes, we are not going to do anything that will hurt our employees."
Wegmans consistently ranks high on Fortune's list of the best companies to work for. It ranked fifth this year.
