BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Word from Washington D.C. Friday afternoon is that President Barack Obama is proposing cuts to social security, as an attempt to compromise with Republicans on the budget. Western New Yorkers who would be impacted by this decision, tell News 4 they hope it doesn't happen.
They say they need every dime that they get from social security, just to keep up with the increased costs in food and everything else. The cuts to social security aren't a done deal yet.
White House officials say President Obama plans to ask Congress next week to approve the cuts as part of his budget. First, the president wants to reduce the cost of living increases. He is also pushing for lower annual cost of living adjustments. Officials say if the changes are implemented it won't affect the elderly or most impoverished.
Western New Yorkers who spoke with News 4 say, the proposed changes will only hurt seniors, especially because so many already are faced with the reality of choosing between food or medicine.
Buffalo resident Patricia Cantrell said, "My mother is, she receives social security and she barely makes it and she lives in Ohio which is a lower bracket in taxes, but she still has such a hard time."
Buffalo resident James Spearman said, "I'm surprised because he's done so much for us poor folks and to cut social security, that's bad thing because some people just have that."
The president will deliver the budget to congress next week on Wednesday, April 10th.
