LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WIVB) - High School Rodeo is new in New York State. There's only ahandful of females in Western New York involved in the sport, butone in particular has been roping up the awards.
Starpoint's Kelsey Baldwin says she loves the sport but twoyears ago, even she had her doubts about some of the events, "I waslike, 'Why would they want to tie goats?' but it's a lot of fun andit's actually a tough challenge."
It didn't take her long to be successful. In her rookie year,she was the 2008 Goat Tying, Break Away, Rodeo Queen and All-AroundChampion.
Not bad for this horse lover, who was looking for a way tochallenge herself.
She's found that it's a lot more dedication and travel than yourtypical high school sport.
Kelsey said, "I wanted to do the sports in high school and stuffbut I think this is a lot more dedication, I have to be out hereevery day taking care of the horses, not always just having fun andcompeting but every day, you know, getting the horses exercise,getting yourself exercise."
As for her future, Kelsey plans to go to college locally for ayear or two once she graduates from Starpoint this summer and thenlook for a scholarship out West.
The state high school rodeo season runs throughout the schoolyear, September through June. The closest competition aroundhere will be in Attica a week from this Saturday.
