ELMIRA, N.Y. (AP) — A house fire in a southern New York town near the Pennsylvania border has left four people dead.
Police and fire officials say the blaze was reported at around 9:20 p.m. Friday at a two-story home on a tidy block in the small riverside city of Elmira.
Police didn't immediately release the names or ages of the victims or confirm reports by neighbors that children were among the dead.
Neighbor Glen Bolt tells the Elmira Star-Gazette (http://stargaz.tt/1e0Etyc ) he ran across the street when he saw flames pouring out of the home and helped another resident smash windows, hoping the kids could escape.
But no one emerged.
Police say firefighters pulled four victims from the building and took them to the hospital. None survived the night.
The cause was under investigation.
