WELLSVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB) - State Police have two suspects in custody after a pursuit that followed gunfire targeting the troopers on the southern tier.
It's a case that crossed state and county lines before ending in Wellsville. Acting on a tip, New York State Police surrounded a trailer where the suspects were believed to be hiding at the Level Acres trailer park early Tuesday afternoon.
Troopers called for them to come out with their hands up several times, but got no response. They set off two flash-bangs, and still got no response. It wasn't until they fired five rounds of tear gas into the trailer that the man and woman jumped out of a back window.
The two are accused of refusing to pull over for a traffic stop, ramming a State Police cruiser with their pickup truck and firing at the two troopers inside, early Tuesday morning in Steuben County. One bullet went through the patrol car, narrowly missing the trooper who was driving.
NYS Police Capt. Scott Crosier said, "He actually felt something against his shoulder. He felt something pressed against his shoulder. Upon our examination of the vehicle, where the round did actually enter the trooper's car, there was some debris that would have flown in that direction."
Troop A Commander Major Christopher Cummings said, "These criminals don't recognize jurisdictional boundaries and therefore ours has to be open and we have to communicate with other agencies, like the Pennsylvania State troopers and other troops, because these crimes, as we've seen late, are starting to spread across larger jurisdictions and areas."
The couple is in custody, but Capt. Crosier said charges will not be determined until Wednesday when police can confer with the Steuben County district attorney. State Police searched the trailer in Wellsville and found a number of drugs there, including heroin. They also recovered the pickup truck the couple was driving and the shotgun from inside.
