BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Erie County Health officials have now linked two localsalmonella infections to tainted peanut butter.
The recall of peanut butter-based products is spreading.
Tops Markets has pulled nearly 30 products, recalled due totainted peanut butter.
Health officials are blaming contaminated spread for aSalmonella outbreak that has sickened nearly 500 people in 43states, and possibly six deaths, including Minnesota grandmother,Shirley Mae Almer, whose family suspects one of the brands ofrecalled peanut butter.
Almer's granddaughter Ginger Lorentz said, "Confused, angry. Itshould not have happened. It should not have happened."
Authorities believe they have pinpointed the source of thetainted peanut butter - a plant operated by Peanut Corporation ofAmerica, in Georgia, which makes peanut butter and peanutpaste.
The Foodand Drug Administration's list of recalled products associatedwith the salmonella is now up to 125, including mostly snacks,cakes, cookies, and ice cream that contain peanut butter.
Tops and other grocery chains have been pulling merchandise forthe last week.
Call 4 Action's Al Vaughters asked, "The jars of peanut butterare okay?"
Buffalo shopper Dan Sobol said, "Right."
Vaughters asked, "It is the snacks that are the problem?"
Sobol said, "The snacks are not good for me anyway."
And just in case, they missed a recalled product, Tops has a"retail block" at checkout.
Tops spokesperson Kate McKenna said, "If a cashier scans theitem, a message will come up for the cashier, and they are actuallyphysically not able to make that sale."
Now PetSmart has announced they have removed six varieties ofGrreat Choice Dog Biscuits, which have been found to contain peanutbutter.
Shopper Darlene Gore said, "Now they're talking about dogbiscuits, and you have to worry about that, too, if you havepuppies, or anything like that, because dogs are getting sick, now.It's scary. You are afraid to buy things now."
Health officials say Erie County's two salmonella cases werereported about a month ago, and the patients are fine.
And while peanut butter in the jar is supposed to be okay,Buffalo School officials say they are not serving peanut butter ofany kind, or related food, until the scare is over.
