DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Voters in part of southeastern Des Moines have selected another Democrat to represent them in the Iowa House.
Polk County records say Des Moines City Councilman Brian Meyer won Tuesday's special election with a little more than 79 percent of the votes, defeating Republican Michael Young.
The House District 33 seat was vacant because Democratic Rep. Kevin McCarthy resigned in August to take a job with the Iowa attorney general. McCarthy, who had been Democratic leader in the House for seven years, represented the district for 11 years.
Meyer likely will resign his council seat.
