NEW YORK (AP) — Public Advocate Bill de Blasio (dih BLAH'-zee-oh) was the focus of the final New York City Democratic mayoral primary debate.
He bore the brunt of criticism and questions from his rivals Tuesday during a showdown one week before the Sept. 10 primary.
De Blasio was accused of flip-flopping on issues, criticized for accepting campaign contributions from landlords on the city's worst slumlords list and challenged on his credibility.
But de Blasio insisted his stances on the issues are "clear as a bell."
The debate occurred hours after a new Quinnipiac (KWIHN'-ih-pee-ak) University poll showed he is the choice of 43 percent of likely Democratic voters. To avoid an Oct. 1 runoff, a candidate must garner more than 40 percent.
