WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is relying on the close counsel of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in the fight to reopen the government and avoid a potential federal default.
White House aides say the two talk several times a week by phone.
They have different styles, to be sure.
Obama is the smooth orator of a younger generation.
Reid's soft-spoken manner can belie his fighting spirit.
But they are united by a shared Democratic ideology and a mutual dependence to get anything accomplished in a legislative environment that's become defined by partisan gridlock.
Obama needs Reid to whip up votes in the Senate.
Reid needs Obama to promote their ideals as the public face of the nation and the Democrats' most vital and high-profile decision-maker.
