AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas state Sen. Tommy Williams, chairman of the powerful Finance Committee, says he'll resign before the 2015 legislative session.
Williams, a Republican from The Woodlands, was the Senate's chief budget writer for the current two-year spending plan. The budget lawmakers passed in May restored many of the historic cuts made just two years earlier.
Williams clashed with some fiscal conservatives who complained the budget spends too much.
An accountant, Williams briefly considered running for state comptroller earlier this year but opted not to seek statewide office.
Williams was elected to the Senate in 2002 after serving three terms in the state House.
