AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis has begun the slow roll out of her campaign for governor with an email to supporters to spread the word and raise money.
The Fort Worth Democrat stopped short of a formal announcement Wednesday, saying she'd reveal her decision Oct. 3. But the email is a signal she intends to run.
Davis attracted national attention when she filibustered to block new abortion restrictions in June, standing for nearly 13 hours in pink running shoes. She was initially successful, but the legislation later passed.
No Democrat has won statewide office in Texas in 20 years. Experts say Davis will need $40 million. Republican candidate Greg Abbott has raised $20 million.
In her email, Davis thanked supporters, saying she was excited about what they could do together.
