State Parks police say 92-year-old Thomas Hamilton and his 66-year-old daughter lost their way while hiking in Allegany State Park, Wednesday afternoon.
They spent the night in the park.
In the morning, she left to find help and managed to locate State Parks Police.
They're now searching about ten square miles of rough, forested terrain.
NYS Park Police Sgt. Tom Krawczyk said, "It's a needle in a haystack right now. But we're going to cover everywhere we possibly can cover and make every effort possible to find him."
Hamilton is said to be in excellent physical shape and already survived one night in the park, so police are hopeful.
But he doesn't have any food with him, and dropping temperatures Thursday night were cause for concern.
"It's cold. Your body loses heat. Hypothermia is a concern of ours, and that's why we're doing everything we possibly can do to locate him," said Krawczyk.
Parks police will resume the search once the sun comes up, and they're hoping Hamilton stayed in the same area and managed to find some shelter.
