FREEDOM, N.Y. (WIVB) - The family of Sgt. Robert Thomas Jr. is on their way to his side at a Texas hospital, thanks to WNY Heroes.
Sgt. Thomas suffered burns to over 87 percent of his body when a roadside bomb exploded in Afghanistan. The 24-year-old was taken to Germany for treatment and later transferred to Ft. Sam Houston Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Sgt. Thomas has had several skin grafts and remains in serious condition.
Currently, Sgt. Thomas's father, Robert Thomas Sr., is with him in Texas. On Thursday, WNY Heros provided two roundtrip tickets for Sgt. Thomas's mother and 7-year-old sister to join their family at the hospital.
On May 11, Sgt. Thomas will undergo surgery to have his ears and fingers removed. Thanks to WNY Heroes, his entire family will be there to comfort and support him.
Sgt. Thomas's family is from Freedom, NY in Cattaraugus County. Though Sgt. Thomas was not born in Freedom, he did live there for a period of time. Sgt. Thomas is also married and has a 1-year-old baby girl.
