PORTVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB) - A trooper helped save the life of a firefighter who responded to a three-car accident on Rt. 417 at Promised Land Road in the Town of Portville on Wednesday.
Three cars collided, leaving two drivers with injuries. State Police and fire companies responded and the drivers were taken by ambulance to Olean General Hospital.
Both ambulances had left the scene and the fire trucks returned to their stations, but some firefighters from Westons Mills Fire Department stayed behind to help control traffic until a tow truck could remove all of the damaged vehicles. It was then that a firefighter collapsed in the roadway.
The remaining firefighters and Trooper John Zeigler snapped into action. The firefighters began CPR, but could find no pulse and the downed firefighter was not breathing. Trooper Zeigler retrieved his AED, or Automated External Defibrillator, from his cruiser and administered a shock to the downed firefighter.
The shock and continued CPR started the man's heart and he began breathing again. He was taken to Olean General Hospital is expected to make a full recovery.
