BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - This summer may not have been ideal for outdoor recreation butit was ideal for the yellow jackets.
In addition to the yellow jacket surplus, the wet spring forcedthem to change their food and nesting cycles and as a result, moreof them built nests in and around homes.
Markus Pickhardt from Buffalo Exterminating said, "It can rangefrom a couple hundred to a couple of thousand. This time of yeartheir nests are at their maximum capacities."
If you decide to tackle the yellow jacket nest on your ownyou'll need to cover your skin from head to toe.
The best time to do this is at night because the insects areless active in the cooler temperatures.
Aerosol sprays are available over the counter but this isn'trecommended if the nest in inside an opening and out of sight.
In this case, professional assistance may be the bestanswer.
"You want to be careful with those products if the yellowjackets are entering the structure. Sometimes you can cause moreproblems if you can't get that material directly on the nest,"Pickhardt explained.
This is something that should be taken seriously because unlikehoney bees, yellow jackets can sting more than once and when theydo sting, a pheromone is released that calls other yellow jacketsto the area to pile onto the target.
"There are things you can do. Yellow jackets are attracted tosweets, they're attracted to colors, and scents so limit the amountof perfume or colognes you are wearing. Even hair products willattract them," said Pickhardt.
You can also take preventative measures during the colder monthsby sealing gaps and holes in and around your home.
Speaking of the colder months, the first frost will knock off asignificant number of the yellow jacket population so we can expectthings to improve steadily during the month of October.
