NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB) - Nik Wallenda had to overcome many obstacles to make it to this point. At the top of the list: money.
The cost associated with Wallenda's walk is tremendous, coming in at more than a million bucks.
"It's been a tough situation all around," Nik said. "Because of course I've been adament about not wearing a safety and I've turned down money because I wasn't going to wear a safety and now I have to wear a safety and I still can't get that money."
Permits for the walk have been costly as well. The permit itself cost $50,000, the state required $150,000 for management costs, and $25,000 for park restoration.
Much of Wallenda's concern over cost comes from the contract he's signed with the television network, broadcasting his walk live around the nation. The amount he's being paid will not cover expenses incurred. News 4's request to see the contract was denied.
Wallenda now hopes folks in the Falls region will reach into their pockets helping to lessen the financial blow. Wallenda's goal is to reach $50,000 by the end of June.
