NIAGARA FALLS, ONT. (WIVB) - Robert Overacker, 39, made history as the first person to plunge over Niagara Falls on a jet ski- but the California stunt man didn't live to tell his story.
A rocket propelled parachute meant to carry to him to safety failed to work and he fell 180 feet to his death.
The life preserver and flotation suit Overacker wore also proved useless. He plunged over the Canadian Horseshoe Falls into the shallow, rocky area at the base.
As Overacker went over the edge, tourists watched in awe realizing the stunt was meant to call attention to teh plight of the homeless.
Police say Overacker had been planning the stunt for seven years, but concerned friends had ruined previous attempts.
His brother and friends were on hand taking pictures. After about three hours of questioning by police, the two men were released and not charged.
