ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) - Bills Head Coach Doug Marrone says quarterback Thad Lewis is "50-50" to play this Sunday against the Chiefs.
X-rays were negative on Lewis's ribs, but Marrone says he has a contusion. Lewis is also battling the flu, so the team held him out of practice today.
In his place, Jeff Tuel and Matt Flynn each took some first-team reps at quarterback. Marrone says he is leaning toward Tuel at the moment, if Lewis can't go.
"Obviously I feel better about Jeff right now because I know Jeff," said Marrone. "That’s not to say Matt’s not good enough, I just haven’t seen enough from Matt to really say it’s a competition yet."
Lewis leap-frogged Tuel on the depth chart when rookie EJ Manuel hurt his knee earlier this month.
"I’ve been going through the process since training camp with Kevin going down and EJ’s little ding, and stuff like that so I have honestly been thrown into situations even if it wasn’t in a game since I’ve got here," said Tuel.
For Flynn, today marked the first time he received starters' reps at practice after signing with the team earlier this month.
"The plays we’re running is the same stuff, everyone everywhere kind of has the same concepts but it’s just a matter of getting the operation down, getting the communication down with the line and letting them hear your voice, things like that," said Flynn.
Manuel practiced today for the first time since his knee injury, but will not return this week.
