PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WIVB) - The spotlight is already on the Bills, with the first practice of training camp under the lights Sunday night at St. John Fisher College.
It marked the first official practice for new Head Coach Doug Marrone and 1st round draft pick E.J. Manuel.
Defensive end Mario Williams did not practice, sitting out with a sore foot.
Much of the focus was on the quarterbacks, as will be the case throughout training camp. Manuel is battling veteran Kevin Kolb for the starting job. Practice reps were evenly split tonight, although Kolb took the lion's share of the work with the starting unit.
Kolb connected on several big throws, hitting Scott Chandler on an out-route early in team drills. Chandler looked good, coming off off-season ACL surgery.
Manuel's night was up and down. He displayed the big arm he's known for, but also threw an interception to Mana Silva.
" This is the first time throwing to receivers in a period of time," said Head Coach Doug Marrone. "We have to work on our timing… We're going to have to do a better job, both in our receiving, throwing, protecting"
Marrone said, ideally he would like to have a decision in place on the quarterback at least 10-12 days before the first game.
Even the players know the quarterback battle will be one of the main storylines in this year's camp.
"The tempo that we're playing, we pretty much get a mix with both quarterbacks ," said wide receiver Stevie Johnson. "I think it's on us as professionals to work that mix and whoever the coaches pick to play QB, then we'll just roll with that."
Other position battles include the left guard spot. Colin Brown took first-team reps there tonight.
The Bills return to practice Monday from 2pm-5pm at St. John Fisher.
