ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) - The Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts swapped underachieving linebackers Monday afternoon, with the Bills sending Kelvin Sheppard to the Colts in exchange for Jerry Hughes.
Hughes is more of a pass-rusher, although he has yet to live up to expectations as a former first-round draft pick. Last season, Hughes appeared in 16 games, starting six. He piled up 41 tackles with a career-high 4.0 sacks.
The trade gives the Bills more flexibility on defense, with Hughes able to play outside linebacker or down as a defensive end.
Sheppard was Buffalo's starting middle linebacker last season, finishing with 80 tackles and 2 sacks. He is a former third round pick.
