What a game.
What a goal.
What a way to win a game.
Tyler Ennis started the scoring, and ended the game, in the Buffalo Sabres 4-3 overtime victory over the Flyers in Philadelphia. The win gives the Sabres a 3-games to two edge in the series, with game six Sunday afternoon at HSBC Arena in Buffalo.
The Sabres did lose forward Jason Pominville in the first period. He appeared to catch a skate from a Flyers player just above the boot of his own skate, and Pominville limped off the ice. Lindy Ruff said Pominville's injury did not look good, but he'll update his status Saturday.
The Sabres got two goals in the first four minutes of the first period, thanks to horrible work in goal by Flyers starter Brian Boucher. Tyler Ennis scored from a tough angle near the boards, and Thomas Vanek knocked one in off Boucher from almost behind the net for a 2-0 Buffalo lead.
The Sabres made it 3-0 on a power play goal from Marc Gragnani, and that was all for Boucher. He was lifted and replaced by Michael Leighton, who spent most of the season playing for the Flyers AHL affiliate. Leighton's last NHL game was December 30th 2010.
Philadelphia bounced back with two goals in the second period, and the Flyers tied it early in the third. Buffalo defenseman Chris Butler misplayed the puck behind his own net, and Mike Richards sent it out front to Danny Briere who scored the equalizer. It was very similar to Briere's goal in game three in Buffalo, when Butler misplayed the puck behind the net.
Ennis ended it by jumping on a rebound of a hard slapshot by Buffalo defenseman Mike Weber, 5:31 into overtime, and the Sabres had their 4-3 win.
It's the Sabres first playoff overtime win in four years. They bring a three games to two edge back to Buffalo for game six Sunday afternoon at 3.
