ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) - Kevin Kolb struggled throughout much of the first half Friday night, while EJ Manuel looked much sharper in the Bills' 20-16 preseason win over the Vikings.
Kolb completed just three passes over the course of his first five drives of the game, including an interception off a poorly-thrown tipped pass on the second drive for the Bills. He finished the game 13-21 for 111 yards.
"I was a little bit disappointed there in the first quarter with myself but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen live action, been a long time since I’ve been on the field with the injury stuff," said Kolb. "I’ll just keep getting better and keep pushing."
Manuel, on the other hand, made an immediate impact when he took the field in the third quarter. The first-round pick went 6-for-6 for 44 yards, capping the drive with a short touchdown pass to Brad Smith. Manuel finished 10-12 for 92 yards and 1 TD.
"I just want to continue to show Coach Hackett that I can learn and continue to show what I can do out on the field to my teammates and continue to earn their respect," said Manuel. "I am satisfied and happy we won the game and I thought we played well tonight."
Defense set the tone for the Bills, with Jerry Hughes coming up with a pair of first-half sacks - one of them, paired with a forced fumble. Marcell Dareus also had a sack, while Jamie Blatnick scored Buffalo's lone first-half touchdown on a fumble recovery.
"Defensively, I think that we’ve tried to establish an identity with the defense right from day one... they made some things happen," said Head Coach Doug Marrone.
