ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) - The Bills introduced their defensive coaching staff Friday - a group charged with the task of turning around a unit that gave up more than 400 points last season.
Defensive Coordinator Mike Pettine says the defense has plenty of talent, so it will be up to him and his staff to figure out how to use it.
"The cupboard's not bare," said Pettine.
Connected with a 3-4 base defense throughout his career, Pettine insists he will not stick to a single defensive formation. Instead, he wants to keep offenses off-balance with a variety of looks on defense.
"We'll have hybrid type players that can rush, that can drop, play inside, stand up," said Pettine.
Another interesting aspect of the defensive coaching staff involves defensive line coach Anthony Weaver, a former teammate of Mario Williams for three seasons in Houston.
"Having that ability of knowing him, know his work ethic, know how tough he is, and know he wants to be great," said Weaver. "Not just for his own legacy... for this town, and it's my job to make sure he realizes all of that."
