BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - With the season on the line, the Sabres self-destructed Friday night, falling 8-4 to the Rangers. The loss eliminates Buffalo from playoff contention.
New York scored 5 goals in a 2:58 stretch of game-time from late in the first period until early in the second frame to effectively put the game out of reach.
Three of those five goals deflected off a Sabres player into the team's own net. The first goal bounced off Adam Pardy's skate, with the second deflecting off Christian Ehrhoff's skate. Goal number five went into the net, courtesy of Mark Pysyk's stick.
In between, Ryan Miller badly mis-played the puck, leading directly to a Ryan Clowe score. Miller gave up another goal early in the second period, before being pulled in favor of Jhonas Enroth. Enroth promptly allowed a goal on the first shot he faced, courtesy of Pysyk's stick.
Buffalo rallied a bit with four goals after that stretch, but the game was never within reach.
Tonight's loss officially eliminates the Sabres from the playoff race. Buffalo will host Winnipeg Monday at 7pm.
