GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) - Rush hour was a mess with one of the Grand Island Bridges closedfor construction. Will it happen again on Thursday?
The short answer is no. Road crews won't be doing any work onthe North Grand Island Bridge Wednesday night or in the morning.But when the work does resume, drivers will notice somethingnew.
In some cases, rush hour traffic was still bumper-to-bumperWednesday night. But there's no doubt, the ride home was a lotsmoother compared to Wednesday morning. Rush hour traffic isusually slow on the Grand Island Bridges, but not like this.Drivers painfully waited to get through it.
Road crews are replacing the deck on the northbound bridge. Sothey've been closing it at night and diverting traffic to thesouthbound bridge. It's supposed to reopen at six in themorning.But the work is taking longer than expected and at onepoint on Wednesday, a crane broke. Contractors from American Bridgeare coming to Buffalo within the next few days.
Buffalo Division Director of the NYS Thruway Thomas Pericaksaid, "We'll be meeting with them to go over what worked, whatdidn't work, and talk about what we can do to basically ensure weget the work done on time."
The bridge will close again at 8 p.m. Thursday night, but crewswill only do some prep work and place markers down the middle ofthe bridge.
"Since we've had this detour in place at night, we have foundmany people passing during the night time. It's one lane of trafficand we've had some very close calls," said Pericak.
