SOUTH VALLEY, N.Y. (WIVB) - Some cemetery trespassers on the southern tier got a legal fright this past weekend.
Cattaraugus County sheriff's deputies say they've charged several people with trespassing at the old Gurnsey Hollow Cemetery in South Valley. The Irish Catholic cemetery has grave sites that date back to the early 1800s.
Recently there has been talk online that the hallowed ground and is haunted, which has attracted several so-called ghost hunters. But it's the mess these people are leaving behind that's really scary.
Capt. Robert Buchhardt said, "There's been such a problem with this, with garbage being left at the cemetery and vandalism and theft at the cemetery, that us in law enforcement have started patrolling this pretty heavy right around the Halloween time."
The cemetery closes at 4:30 p.m. each afternoon. Anyone caught inside the cemetery after that time will be charged with trespassing.
A Buffalo Police vehicle was involved in a two-car crash around 8:40 a.m. Monday. The crash happened at Bailey and LaSalle Avenues.
