BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Monday night’s Buffalo Sabres game will be one to watch. Former Buffalo Sabres Head Coach will be back in the building, this time with the Dallas Stars on the visitor’s bench. The number 26 will also return to the ice, but this time it will be worn by Matt Moulson.
The morning after the Sabres announced trading Thomas Vanek to the New York Islanders, they gave his number to former New York Islander Matt Moulson. The team also picked up a first-round pick in 2014, and a second-round pick in 2015 in the trade.
Moulson grew up in Mississauga, Ontario and says he is familiar with the Buffalo area. While growing up, Moulson would go to Buffalo Bills games.
Moulson said, “I used to love coming to Bills games. It’s a great city and who knows, it could be for a long time. We’ll see what they have in store.”
He explained what it was like practicing with a team he met minutes before. “I think hockey guys are a different breed. It’s pretty easy to get acquainted with them, very welcoming obviously and I think it’s an easy transition. In a couple days I am sure it will be like I’ve been here all year.”
Vanek, who played for Buffalo for ten years, sent this message out on Twitter Monday morning, “Thank you Buffalo! I really enjoyed my time here, my wife and I got to raise our family in a great community.. Excited to join @NYIslanders.”
Matt Moulson also Tweeted, saying, “Would like to thank all the great people and fans I was able to meet in NY..I will miss you all..this is the beginning of a new chapter.”
After practice Monday, Sabres forward Cody Hodgson said, “Not having Van on the ice and then looking across to the other team’s bench, it’s Lindy. It’s going to be mixed emotions all around tonight but it’s going to be a good game. We’re excited to have Matt Moulson here too.”
News 4 was there when Ruff came through the visitor’s side toward the ice. The Sabres winningest coach had a smile on his face and was looking around the building. Sabres goalie Ryan Miller was the first one to go up to him and say hello.
