100-year-old carousel in North Tonawanda needs your help

NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) — After a century of creating memories for multiple generations, the number one special needs some major repairs to keep spinning.

“The part at the top, it’s called the main hub, that helps all the horses crank around, it has a crack in it now,” explained Megan Hahin, the Education Director at the Herschell Carousel Factory Museum. “It’s made out of cast iron, so it’s a little bit weak and it cracked over the winter. To get it running again, we need to have a new part made, and it’s going to be custom made.”

The new main hub will be made out of steel, much stronger than the iron, but the custom part won’t be cheap. They are hoping to raise $40,000. While the museum does have some money to invest, they are asking for a little help from the public through donations.

“We have a lot of different donation levels, and with those you get different gifts,” Hahin said. “Like passes to come to the museum, ride tokens, you’ll have the opportunity to be the first people back on the carousel once it’s up and running again.”

And they plan on having the carousel operational by this June. In the meantime, the Museum is now open for the season, so you can come see the multiple exhibits, including the wood-carving station, and once the weather warms up, they’ll open their outdoor section, with fun rides for the kids.Click here if you’d like to make a donation to help fix the carousel.
