Thousands of people have signed a Change.org petition asking the Buffalo City Council to reconsider changes to parking downtown.

The council approved a series of changes to the city’s parking regulations on Wednesday, which phase out the current $1 an hour rate on most city parking spots and raise the rate to $2 an a hour, as well as changing free parking from after 5 p.m. to after 10 p.m. and eliminating free parking on Saturdays. It also gets rid of many free parking spaces at Canalside.

The regulations also call for adding hundreds of new metered spaces downtown.

City leaders say the new regulations are intended to keep spaces open to more visitors instead of drivers who work downtown and park in the spaces all day.

Many people who work downtown oppose the new regulations.

“Paying until 5 p.m. is pretty standard and expected- that was fine,” downtown employee Reba Allen said. “Paying until 10 p.m. is a lot of extra money for a lot of people.”
