Albany mayor says city was attacked by ransomware

News

The Mayor of Albany says her city has experienced a ransomware cyber attack.

Mayor Kathy Sheehan said the city is working to find out how much was compromised in the attack.

A cybersecurity expert says these types of incidents are more common than you think.

“A criminal can, essentially, scan the internet looking for vulnerabilities,” Greycastle Security co-founder Michael Stamas says. “When they identify those vulnerabilities, they are able to exploit those vulnerabilities and launch like ransomware. It’s actually very common. We see it and respond to incidents every week.”

People can protect their files by backing up and updating their computers on a regular basis.

Two things people shouldn’t do are open emails from people they don’t know or pay criminals who put ransomware on their computer.
