North Tonawanda police say a man’s body was found in a car that was recovered from the Erie Canal early Sunday morning.

Police recovered a car that went into the Erie Canal between the cities of Tonawanda and North Tonawanda, and found a man’s body inside.

Witnesses saw headlights in the water just before 11 p.m. Saturday night near the corner of Sweeney Street and Service Drive, according to Capt. Thomas Krantz, North Tonawanda Police.

Dive teams were brought to the canal.  Eventually, the car was found and brought to the surface.

The car was reported stolen in the City of Buffalo earlier in the evening, according to police.

The man is tentatively identified, but police must confirm his identity and notify relatives of the death before releasing his name, police said in a statement.
