SUNSET BAY, N.Y. (WIVB) — The body of missing kayaker Dylan Lathrop, 20, was recovered from Lake Erie Thursday morning, according to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office.
Lathrop, who lived in South Dayton, went out on Cattaraugus Creek Tuesday to kayak with friends.
Officials say he and his friends paddled into dangerous territory, where six-to-eight foot waves eventually caused their boats to capsize.
Although three of the men were able to swim between 100 and 200 yards to make it back to the shoreline, Lathrop did not survive the wrathful waters.
Following hours of searching, officials with the Sheriff’s Office made the announcement that Lathrop was found Thursday around 10 a.m.
His body was recovered around 10 a.m. near the scene where the capsize incident is believed to have happened. Divers with the New York State Police made the discovery in about 16 feet of water.
Lathrop’s official cause of death has not yet been determined.
