BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A teacher in the Buffalo school district is being rewarded for over 30 years of hard work and dedication.
Maureen England is a Buffalo Public Schools teacher who works with inner-city students. Her daughter Ashley England says in those 30 years, she hasn’t taken a day off. England is also a veteran adjunct professor at Medaille College.
“She’s very modest, she’d never admit she’s helped people,” Ashley said to Turkish Airlines. “I don’t actually think she knows how many lives she’s changed.”
So Ashley, a Buffalo native who now lives in Chicago, submitted her mother for the “Gotta Get Out” competition with Turkish Airlines. The prize to winners of the contest is an open-ended trip to anywhere in the world.
“She put herself through college and graduate school with three kids at home,” Ashley said. “With her health issues, it’s very frustrating to see your mother sick.”
Despite Maureen’s health issues, Ashley says she has never stopped working and giving to students, not even when she was diagnosed with cancer.
“When they put her on chemo, it’s hard to watch her go through that,” she said. “And she never takes a break.”
Ashley, who studied in Italy when she was a student, said she’d like to take the “opportunity of a lifetime” to let her mother see the influential location.
“She is constantly working and constantly giving to others, so I think it would be good for her to slow down for a little bit, and Italy would be the perfect place to do that.”
