VARYSBURG, N.Y. (WIVB) - Western New Yorkers love to hit the links when the weather warms up, and this week, News 4 asked you which is Buffalo's Best golf course.
Byrncliff Golf Resort & Banquets in Varysburg came out on top in this poll!
"I usually tell people when it's their first time coming here that it won't be their last time, just because everyone tends to fall in love with this course," said Mike Poirier, Assistant Director of Golf at Byrncliff.
The 72 par, 18 hole public course is nestled in a picturesque valley in Wyoming County, and the views are one of a kind.
"It's hillier than most, and it has a lot of scenic value to it," explained Scott Meidenbauer, Byrncliff's owner and general manager.
Byrncliff has been family owned and operated for more than 50 years. Even the pets are part of the welcoming committee, with guests enjoying time with Wilson the cat and Bucky the dog almost as much as they enjoy their time on the greens.
A hardworking team meticulously maintains that 6,800 yard course, from the rolling fairways to the creatively designed flower gardens, which are works of art on their own.
Guests come back to Byrncliff from all over the region year after year.
"We love it here," said Fernando Bevilacqua, who was visiting Byrncliff from Welland, Ontario, Friday morning. "We've been coming for quite a few yearsand I brought my friends from my hockey team here, and we just enjoy it."
And, Bevilacqua points out, it's not just the golfing that draws his group in.
"We love the course, but the food is good and the people treat us very nice," he said.
After a long day on the links, guests are able to dig into delicious dishes in the on-site restaurant, which offers everything from wings and beef on weck to signature burgers and fine dining for the banquets crowds.
"One of the things that we strive for with the culinary team, and with every department here, is how do we keep up with the greatness of the golf course," said Alex Dispense, the executive chef at Byrncliff.
That mission starts at breakfast, which is ready at 7 a.m. for day visitors and for guests who stay in the 25 room hotel.
"Our Stay and Play packages are very popular with the locals, and especially the Canadians," said Poirier. "They love to come down. We have groups that have been coming here for 30 years without missing a single year."
Byrncliff is truly a year-round destination, with golfing allowed until the snow covers the course. When the snow flies, the same hills are used for a cross-country skiing course.
During the warmer months, though, Byrncliff offers a pool, driving range, mini-golf, ice cream shop, and of course, Buffalo's Best golf course, to keep guests coming back for more.
"To be named number one is really an honor and we're humbled by it, because there's a lot of nice courses in the area," Meidenbauer told News 4. "So we're very pleased that we got that award."
