GASPORT, N.Y. (WIVB) - Fall is in the air, and this week, News 4 has been asking viewers where the best place is to go apple picking.
Becker Farms in Gasport came out on top in the poll!
"I feel honored. It’s a great boost for us and for our employees. It’s good for morale," said Becker Farms co-owner Melinda Vizcarra, after the Buffalo's Best winner was revealed Friday morning.
Vizcarra is part of five generations of family farmers at Becker Farms who are carrying on the apple growing tradition in one of the oldest apple growing regions in the country. Vizcarra's great grandfather started Becker Farms in 1894.
Every year, throughout the fall season, Becker Farms welcomes in big crowds to enjoy all the fall festivities and to perfect their apple picking skills. "You don’t want to just pull it off the tree. You have to turn it off the tree," Vizcarra advised.
The varieties of apples you can pick depends on when in the season you go. "Right now, we still have plenty of Crispin and Ida Red, and there’s still some Cortland," Vizcarra said. "The Empire and Red Delicious, we have some, but you might have to climb the ladder."
Some of the earlier varieties, like the Ginger Golds and the Galas, were actually damaged by the sun and the hot, dry weather over the summer.
That weather has changed, though, and the apples that are on the trees now are in great shape.
"We got some rain so they've got a good size to them now, and it’s cooled off, and they seem really good right now," Vizcarra said.
That makes them perfect for all the apple goodies that are available at Becker Farms, from the famous pies, to the apple butter, apple sauce, apple wine, and hard and sweet apple ciders, all made on site.
Becker Farms makes thousands of gallons of the fresh cider every season, passing it through a UV light to remove pathogens rather than pasteurizing it, to preserve the perfect cider flavor.
Of course, for many, the biggest draw is still the apple picking itself. And, if you're looking for a place to get your fill of that fun, Becker Farms is Buffalo's Best.
"We really try to make everyone’s experience here fun and enjoyable and memorable to that they come back year after year," Vizcarra said.
Becker Farms is offering fall family fun with haunted hayrides and Pumpkin Fiestas every weekend through the end of October. Click here to learn more about the ongoing events.
