BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Officials confirmed Thursday that the largest Sonic Drive-In in the country would be coming to western New York.
Officials in Cheektowaga say a property at 3601 Union Road will be the site of the restaurant. It’s a site which has been closed down for over 10 years, but formerly held a Mexican restaurant and a Perkins before becoming vacant.RELATED | Four ways restaurants get you to spend more money
Acquest Development requested a permit to open the Sonic this past week, and in the permit said the building would hold seating for up to 100 people and have at least 20 drive-up bays.
Many Sonic restaurants have no space inside to seat guests — they average out at about 2,000 square feet. But the Sonic in Cheektowaga will be the largest in the nation with inside seating bumping the space required to about 4000 square feet.
“We are very excited about landing Sonic, and the buzz it is creating,” an official from Acquest Development said.
The new business is actually inspiring more businesses to come in to a nearby Cheektowaga plaza which is down to its last business.
“This lease, combined with Red Cross and Get Air as new tenants this summer are breathing new life into a Cheektowaga plaza that has been largely vacant for years,” the official said. “Our hope is that Sonic will help us make that plaza.”
Officials don’t know exactly how long construction will take, but say by the end of the summer or early fall, residents can expect the Sonic to be open.
Although the nearest Sonic Drive-In restaurants are in Rochester to the east or Cleveland, Ohio to the west, many western New Yorkers say they still regularly see commercials for the company.
