The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a mail scam that’s been circulating the area.

Authorities say residents have been receiving letters in the mail from “DotService.com.”

These letters have been telling people that their Department of Transportation (DOT) number is past due and that they need to complete a “biennial update” or face a penalty of $1,000, up to $10,000.

The letters also threaten to deactivate the person’s DOT number.

The Department of Motor Vehicles confirmed that this is indeed a scam, and the Sheriff’s Office advises anyone who receives a letter to not respond or provide any personal information.
